Voice over Internet Protocol or VoIP, in simple words, is a phone service that works over the internet. If a user has good quality internet connection they can get VoIP services delivered through their internet rather than from any local phone company. Some people use Voice over IP along with their traditional telephone system, since VoIP service providers generally offer low calling rates compared to the traditional telephone companies. However, sometimes it does not offer emergency services, phone directory listings or other common phone services. Whilst a lot of VoIP service providers offer these services, but consistent industry-wide means of offering these services are still developing. A method is needed to turn analogue phone signals into digital signals which can be sent over the internet. This function can either be included in the phone itself or in a separate box such as ATA.
